Twelve months later John Campbell arrived from Oxford University as coach, providing a major impetus as Panathinaikos established themselves among Greece's elite. The Greens won their first league title in 1930, under Hungarian coach Joseph Kinsler. Ten years later they secured the Greek Cup for the first time, defeating Aris Thessaloniki FC 3-1. Panathinaikos truly made their mark after the Second World War, winning seven league crowns and two cups by 1965, with Yugoslavian Stjepan Bobek's charges undefeated throughout the 1963/64 league campaign. They almost eclipsed it all when another Hungarian, Ferenc Puskás, guided them to the 1971 European Champion Clubs' Cup showpiece. Panathinaikos saw off ŠK Slovan Bratislava, Everton FC and FK Crvena zvezda to set up a Wembley final against Rinus Michels's AFC Ajax, the Dutch side running out 2-0 winners. Buoyed by the Vardinoyannis family's investment as Greek football turned professional, Panathinaikos added two more league titles and five domestic cups to their haul during the 1980s. They also reached the 1984/85 European Cup semi-finals, losing 5-0 on aggregate to Liverpool FC, and 11 years later they were again in the last four, missing out to Ajax on that occasion. Four league championships and as many Greek Cups were also secured before Olympiacos FC took a stranglehold on the domestic game. The Piraeus Reds have won 12 of the last 14 league titles, with Panathinaikos breaking their run with a double under Itzhak Shum in 2003/04 and another with Nikos Nioplias in charge in 2009/10.
